Interlibrary Loan
An Interlibrary Loan request is a request for a book, a periodical article or a film in dvd or vhs form that is owned by a library located outside the Berks County Library System Area.
It is often confused with a hold. A hold is placed on an item that is located in the Yocum Library or in a library within the Library System of Berks County Libraries. A hold is placed by a patron or by a staff member on behalf of a patron when the item that they want is located in a library they cannot get to or it is out in circulation and they want to be the next one to use it.
An Interlibrary Loan is a request for an item that cannot be located within Berks County. If a patron requires an item that is essential for their use and is not available to them in The Yocum Library or within the Berks County Library System, they may request an Interlibrary Loan.
The Interlibrary Loan Librarian will then locate this item somewhere within the United States, or sometimes outside the United States and have it sent to the Yocum Library for use by the patron.
Due to the high cost the library pays for this service, it is provided only to members of the RACC community – RACC students, staff, faculty, trustees, and alumni. And to be eligible for interlibrary loan services, the patron must have a current library card, no blocks, no fines, and no overdue items. Also, Interlibrary Loan is not to be used as a hold service. It is a service to be used judiciously so that the library can continue to absorb the cost.
The request form for an Interlibrary Loan transaction can be found on the Yocum Library website. The library reserves the right to refuse a request which violates local, state or federal laws such as but not limited to copyright violations.
