Fact of the Day

Fact of the Day : What was the subject of the Oscar-winning film 'One Day in September' (1999)? (from A Dictionary of Sports Studies)

One Day in September A documentary film (1999) of the Palestinian terrorist attack on, and murder of, eleven Israeli athletes at the 1972 Munich Olympics. Directed by Kevin Macdonald, it won an Oscar (Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature 2000).

The film was a landmark in the investigative sport documentary, including an interview with Jamal Al-Gashey, believed to be the only surviving terrorist (and in hiding in Africa). The film also implies that the German security service was inadequate, in marked contrast to the security systems that underpin the staging of large-scale sporting events in the 21st century.
