"Icarus Cup" A free-flying festival that first took place in Saint-Hilaire du Touvet, in the Rhône-Alpes region of France, in 1974, claiming to be the oldest such festival in the world. It is held annually, in September, and attracts more than 8,000 pilots of aircraft ranging from hang gliders and paragliders to hot air balloons, and includes stunt kite demonstrations. The event lasts for four days and is as much carnival and festival as sporting contest, attracting 75,000 visitors. The event also includes a film festival and an aeronautical display by the French Air Force.
