Fact of the Day : How is Arkansas stone used in the field of dentistry? (from A Dictionary of Dentistry)

Arkansas stone A fine grained abrasive quartz rock (novaculite) used for sharpening non-disposable surgical and dental instruments; it is found in the Ouachita mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma. The grain of the silica crystals that form novaculite are approximately the same size (3–5[mu]), whether the stone is classified as soft Arkansas or hard Arkansas. After use the stone should be cleaned using a solvent.
