Fact of the Day

Fact of the Day : In which year did the first Calgary Stampede take place? (from The Oxford Companion to Canadian History)

Calgary Stampede. The city of Calgary is recognized globally for its annual stampede, a time when the city dons its western garb, puts on its cowboy face, and treats visitors from around the world to the hospitality of the Old West. Originally a rodeo grafted onto an agricultural exhibition, the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede features one of the world's top rodeos , and has given Calgary the most distinctive urban image in Canada.
Ironically, when in 1912 the first stampede was promoted by American entrepreneur Guy Weadick , and backed financially by four Alberta ranchers, it was meant to be no more than a farewell tribute to the passing of the ranching era. Resurrected in 1923 with the popular chuck wagon race, the stampede has become a cultural phenomenon and a powerful visible presence in the city. In 2000 , over 1.2 million visitors spent $120 million enjoying the ‘greatest outdoor show on earth’.
