On The Yocum Library’s New Books Shelf:

Title: Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less
Author: Alex Sojung-Kim Pang

Ever feel like all you do is work, yet your to-do list just continues to expand? Author Alex Sojung-Kim Pang tells us that the key to lowering our stress and getting more done is to take a break. In his book, Rest: Why You Get More Done When You Work Less, Pang discusses the importance of rest, not just in getting adequate sleep every night, but in taking scheduled naps, walking and exercising, following a morning routine, getting involved in an outside interest, and taking sabbaticals from regular work.

It may sound counterproductive. “But I can’t do those things,” you might complain. “I have too much to do to take a break.” Pang presents strong arguments for why you need to do just that.

In addition to scientific evidence to support his arguments, all explained in layman’s terms, Pang provides numerous examples of others who made time for rest and got a lot done. For example, Winston Churchill took regular naps and Dwight D. Eisenhower rented a cottage in England; both did so in order to relieve the stress caused by their responsibilities during World War II. If they can take a break, why can’t we?

If you’re feeling overwhelmed with all of your obligations, you might want to read Pang’s book. It could change your mind about those breaks. - Theresa Ann Barbieri
