Book Review: "You're in the Wrong Bathroom!": And 20 Other Myths and Misconceptions About Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming People

by Brenna Corbit, Technical Services Librarian

The point of "You're in the Wrong Bathroom!" is just what the subtitle states—to dispel the Myths and Misconceptions about Transgender and Gender-Nonconforming People. Transgenderism is complex, with each shade of gender identity as numerous as there are trans-people.

The authors clarify this multifaceted subject with four sections—Identity, Sex and Relationships, Health and Safety, and History and Community, which is sub-divided into 21 chapters/myths averaging five pages each. The resources section has more than 20 pages of suggested reading, films, and online sources. Much of the information is repeated permitting readers to choose chapters relevant to their needs rather than read the entire book.

The two authors base their information on strong experience and much research. Laura Erickson-Schroth is a New York City-based psychiatrist who works with LGBT people and the editor of Trans Bodies, Trans Selves, also in the Yocum Library collection. Laura A. Jacobs, who identifies as transgender and genderqueer, is a psycho-therapist, a writer, activist, and public speaker on LGBT diversity issues, also in New York City.

This book is timely since much controversy about bathrooms and other transgender debates has been current in the news locally and abroad. Regardless of your professional or personal knowledge level of this subject, the authors do well to educate readers. The sad thing about books like these is that those who really should read them probably never will.
