From the Desk of Valerie Schaeffer- Film Review

Film Review — Piranha

If you like Jaws, chances are that you will also enjoy Piranha, the latest movie by director Alexandre Aja.

Piranha follows the sheriff, played by Elizabeth Shue, of a small town of Lake Victoria. As the town fills up with locals and out-of-towners to celebrate Spring Break, the sheriff starts noticing some odd things, like the carcasses of two scuba-diving scientists sent underwater to determine exactly what is going on.

What is going on is the assault of prehistoric, man-eating fish that were released from the depths of Lake Victoria by a deepwater tremor. As the fish make their way to the surface, bodies start piling up. Can the sheriff save the Spring Breakers and her own family? Or will they all become fish food?

Piranha also stars Jessica Szohr, Steven R. McQueen, Jerry O’Connell, Ving Rhames, and Christopher Lloyd. And for those of you who love Jaws, don’t miss the beginning of Piranha, which features one of the stars of Jaws, Richard Dreyfuss.

Piranha is rated R for language, nudity, and gruesome scenes. Piranha can be found in the Yocum Library's "Horror" section.
