Times Beach A small city in Missouri that was evacuated by order of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1983 after dangerous concentrations of dioxins were found in the soil, which, in order to reduce dust, had been sprayed with oil containing dioxins.
This was one of several environmental and ecological disasters in the late 1970s and early 1980s that galvanized public opinion in the United States, leading to more stringent regulation of environmental hazards.
