RACC likely to raise tuition nearly 6%

Students at Reading Area Community College could see a 5.84 percent tuition increase this fall.

Dr. Anna D. Weitz
The $28.77 million budget proposed for 2012-13 calls for raising the cost per credit $8, to $145 from $137, for part-time students.

For full-time Berks County students, tuition would rise to $2,175 per semester from $2,055.

RACC's president, Dr. Anna D. Weitz, said the proposed increase is a response to several factors, including a 5 percent decrease in state funding, increased expenses and a decline in full-time enrollment at community colleges across the state.

RACC expects the funding decrease to total $390,657, but Weitz stressed that that is not the sole reason for the proposed tuition increase.

The proposed tuition hike comes at a bad time, according to Meagan Harnish, a nursing student from Womelsdorf.

"They're already raising book prices," she said. "Now to raise tuition on top of that? I feel like it's a lot, especially in this time, when it's so hard to find a job."

RACC employee Sanya Williams, a former student who recently transferred to Penn State Berks, doesn't like the increase either, but said the community college remains a bargain.

"RACC is still a great price, compared with $10,000 to $11,000," she said, referring to tuition elsewhere.

At a recent meeting with trustees, Theodore Bassano, RACC treasurer and senior vice president of business services, described the proposed budget as balanced and reasonable.

"It's just prudent fiscal management of our existing resources," Bassano said.

The board of trustees is expected to vote on the proposed budget June 20.

RACC Idols

Singer-guitarist wins RACC Idols competition
Reading Eagle

Singer-guitarist Dan Mergner gives his winning performance Friday at Reading Area Community College's RACC Idols talent competition in the Miller Center for the Arts. It was an old classic performed by singer-guitarist Dan Mergner that brought down the house Friday night at Reading Area Community College.

Mergner's rendition of Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" earned the respiratory-care major top honors in the ninth annual RACC Idols talent competition in the Miller Center for the Arts. Second place went to chemistry major Sharibel Urena, who performed a medley of classical songs on the piano.

Mergner and Urena took their talents up against six other acts in a contest judged by a team of administrators, faculty and staff. "It's been very interesting to see how talented our students really are," said Sue Gelsinger, student activities coordinator. "They don't get to showcase it too often."

Both Mergner and Urena will now compete against students from Albright College, Alvernia University, Kutztown University, Penn State Berks and Penn State Schuylkill at the Berks Got Talent competition. It will be held April 20 at RACC.
