What Causes Snow?


Snow is usually the result of the warm air associated with an extratropical cyclone (low pressure area, as in the diagram above) flowing up and over the cold air surrounding part of the cyclone.

The air being lifted, combined with the abundant water vapor available from the warm air mass the rising air originates from, causes clouds to form. The cloud water (or cloud ice) is collected by falling ice particles, which grow as the super-cooled cloud water freezes onto them. (Even at temperatures as low as -40 degrees F, tiny cloud water droplets remain liquid, until they become attached to an ice particle, and then they freeze.)

The ice particles also grow as some of the water vapor in the surrounding air collects and freezes on them.

The falling ice particles in the clouds grow and combine together to become so large (called aggregates) that their fall speed exceeds the upward flowing air speed in the clouds, and they then fall out the bottom of the cloud, reaching the ground if they do not re-evaporate.

The more water vapor there is available to the cloud, and the stronger the updrafts that cause this water vapor to condense into cloud water or ice particles, the more likely it is that snow will form within the cloud, and that the snowfall accumulation could be large.

So, a cold, cloudy day with no snow indicates that there is either not enough water vapor available to the cloud, or that the rising motion creating the cloud is not enough to cause snow (or both). A heavy snowfall results from abundant water vapor combined with strong and persistent rising motion in the clouds.

Snow can also form from very cold air flowing over a large ice-free lake, a situation called lake effect snow.

In mountainous regions, air being forced to rise as it flows up and over the mountain can cause large snowfall accumulations. Precipitation caused by this mountain-forced ascent is called orographic precipitation. In regions where this occurs, the downwind side of the mountain often receives little or no snow, since most of the water vapor in the air has already been removed as snow on the upwind side of the mountain.

5 Reasons Sandy Will Be Epic

1. A Northbound Hurricane
Hurricane Sandy is moving slowly toward the north-northeast and is expected to continue its current path parallel to the Carolinas over the weekend, forecasters say. At some point, it is expected to become what's known as an extratropical storm. Unlike a tropical system like a hurricane, which gets its power from warm ocean waters, extratropical systems are driven by temperature contrasts in the atmosphere. At some point, probably Monday, Sandy will begin to turn back toward the coast and eventually make landfall over Delaware or New Jersey.

Although Sandy is currently a hurricane, it's important not to focus too much on its official category or its precise path. It's a massive system that will affect a huge swath of the eastern U.S., regardless of exactly where it hits or its precise wind speed. For example, tropical storm-force winds can be felt 450 miles away from the storm's center, according to the National Hurricane Center. The Federal Emergency Management Agency has personnel and supplies spread as far west as the Ohio River Valley, said Craig Fugate, the agency's director.

2. Early Winter Storm
As part of Sandy’s transition to an extratropical storm, it is expected to merge with a wintry system from the west, at which point it will become the powerful superstorm that has forecasters and officials all along the Eastern Seaboard on edge. Winds from that western system, which left snow in Kila, Mont. shown above, are what will help pull Sandy back toward the U.S. mainland from the open waters of the Atlantic.

3. Arctic Air From the North
Frigid air coming south from Canada also is expected to get ingested into Sandy, which will only help to strengthen the storm further and create winter storm conditions for some in the storm’s path.

Officials are bracing for the worst: nearly a foot of rain, high winds and up to 2 feet of snow in the highest parts of the Appalachian Mountains from West Virginia to North Carolina.

4. High Tides Could Worsen Flooding
Further complicating matters is the possibility for dangerous storm surges: A full moon means the tides will be higher than usual, which will make it easier for the storm's powerful winds to push water into low-lying areas. That, coupled with the threat of several inches of rain, has officials working to shore up flood defenses.

Storm surge could reach 4 to 8 feet from Maryland to Rhode Island, forecasters say. And inland river flooding is also a major concern, federal officials said Sunday.

5. Snow-Wind Combo Increases Risk for Power Outages
Storms in recent years have left hundreds of thousands of people along the East Coast without power, sometimes for days at a time. Utilities have been bringing in extra crews and lining up tree trimmers so they're prepared, and with good reason.

The superstorm brings two possibilities for knocking out electricity. For one, hurricane-force winds of at 74 mph could send tree branches into power lines, or even topple entire trees and power poles. Those left standing could succumb to snow, which could weigh down still-leafy branches enough to also topple trees.

Millions of people are expected to lose power at some point during Sandy and many of those folks will likely not have power restored for many days.

Extreme Heat: A Prevention Guide to Promote Your Personal Health and Safety

Elderly people (65 years and older), infants and children and people with chronic medical conditions are more prone to heat stress.

Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. During conditions of extreme heat, spend time in locations with air-conditioning such as shopping malls, public libraries, or public health sponsored heat-relief shelters in your area.

•Get informed. Listen to local news and weather channels or contact your local public health department during extreme heat conditions for health and safety updates.

•Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages and increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level.

Heat-related deaths and illness are preventable yet annually many people succumb to extreme heat. Historically, from 1979-2003, excessive heat exposure caused 8,015 deaths in the United States. During this period, more people in this country died from extreme heat than from hurricanes, lightning, tornadoes, floods, and earthquakes combined. In 2001, 300 deaths were caused by excessive heat exposure.

People suffer heat-related illness when their bodies are unable to compensate and properly cool themselves. The body normally cools itself by sweating. But under some conditions, sweating just isn't enough. In such cases, a person's body temperature rises rapidly. Very high body temperatures may damage the brain or other vital organs.

Several factors affect the body's ability to cool itself during extremely hot weather. When the humidity is high, sweat will not evaporate as quickly, preventing the body from releasing heat quickly. Other conditions related to risk include age, obesity, fever, dehydration, heart disease, mental illness, poor circulation, sunburn, and prescription drug and alcohol use.

Because heat-related deaths are preventable, people need to be aware of who is at greatest risk and what actions can be taken to prevent a heat-related illness or death. The elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases are at highest risk. However, even young and healthy individuals can succumb to heat if they participate in strenuous physical activities during hot weather. Air-conditioning is the number one protective factor against heat-related illness and death. If a home is not air-conditioned, people can reduce their risk for heat-related illness by spending time in public facilities that are air-conditioned.

Summertime activity, whether on the playing field or the construction site, must be balanced with measures that aid the body's cooling mechanisms and prevent heat-related illness. This pamphlet tells how you can prevent, recognize, and cope with heat-related health problems.

What Is Extreme Heat?
Conditions of extreme heat are defined as summertime temperatures that are substantially hotter and/or more humid than average for location at that time of year. Humid or muggy conditions, which add to the discomfort of high temperatures, occur when a "dome" of high atmospheric pressure traps hazy, damp air near the ground. Extremely dry and hot conditions can provoke dust storms and low visibility. Droughts occur when a long period passes without substantial rainfall. A heat wave combined with a drought is a very dangerous situation.

During Hot Weather
To protect your health when temperatures are extremely high, remember to keep cool and use common sense. The following tips are important:

Drink Plenty of Fluids
During hot weather you will need to increase your fluid intake, regardless of your activity level. Don't wait until you're thirsty to drink. During heavy exercise in a hot environment, drink two to four glasses (16-32 ounces) of cool fluids each hour.

Warning: If your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or has you on water pills, ask how much you should drink while the weather is hot.

Don't drink liquids that contain alcohol, or large amounts of sugar—these actually cause you to lose more body fluid. Also avoid very cold drinks, because they can cause stomach cramps.

Don't forget the pets



• Pet owners should recognize and guard against heat stroke in pets.

• Pets should have access to shade and unlimited cool clean water at all times.

• Never leave a pet in an unattended vehicle.

• Panting means an animal is hot and is trying to cool itself and might need additional cooling such as a fan.

• Doghouses can be especially deadly due to lack of air flow even if shaded.

• When pets dig holes it means they are trying to find a cooler place.

• Caged and chained animals are especially at risk. Keep pets indoors.
